Top Ten Reasons to Visit Helen, Georgia

helen 076

The purpose of our Blue Ridge Cabin Rentals Blog is to provide information on things to see, do and enjoy in the North Georgia Mountains, and Helen in particular.  In over a year, we have barely scratched the surface in our posts on what visitors can expect when vacationing in our area, so stay tuned!  You can follow us by email, or on Facebook, Twitter and Google+ for updates.

For this post, we are highlighting the most popular reasons why people from all over come to Helen and the surrounding areas for weekend getaways and vacations.  These are not in any particular order, and some subjects have been covered more in depth in other posts.  If you would like more information, just type a word in the search bar at the top of our Blog, (such as “tubing”) and it will show you any posts related to that word.

So here we go!

fall pix 2012 032

1.      Enjoy the Scenery- driving through the mountains can be a pleasure at any time of year.  The trees and foliage change colors and shapes as the seasons change, from the pastels of spring, deep colors of summer, to autumn’s final glory.  Mountain ranges, overlooks, waterfalls, lakes, creeks, and of course, rivers run through the area making nearly every turn a photo opportunity.  There are also many activities that get you out in nature, which leads us to….

2.      Outdoor Activities-   Helen, Georgia is next to Unicoi State Park and also the Chattahoochee National Forest.  Hiking trails thread throughout the area, including the famous Appalachian Trail.  Mountain Biking, Horseback Riding, Fishing, and Tubing down the river are just a few of the many activities available to visitors.  Most recently, Zip-lining has been added with the expansion of Zip-N-Time in nearby Sautee-Nacocchee Village.

3.      Events- The Annual Oktoberfest celebration is well-known throughout the South, and  continues to be our most popular event.  Set up to resemble a Bavarian Village, Helen, Georgia is in her element to entertain visitors when it comes to this type of month-long celebration.  Other Bavarian festivals, such as Fasching and Bavarianfest, are held here at other times of the year, as well.  Add to that a Balloon race, various car shows, motorcycle rallies, Winefest, parades, live music concerts…too many to mention here, but there is usually something going on!  Each month, we post the following month’s events on our blog, so sign up to follow us or check back often.

4.      Proximity- Helen, Georgia and the surrounding area is an affordable destination, uniquely situated at the foot of the Appalachians and the Blue Ridge Mountains.  Travel time is roughly 1.5 to 2 hours from Atlanta, and it is one of the closest mountain destinations for those traveling from Florida.  We also get travelers from surrounding states, such as North and South Carolina, Alabama, and Tennessee.  We even have repeat guests from as far away as Michigan and Texas!  Though not as large and sprawling as some tourist destinations (and we like it like that), Helen welcomes visitors year round.

helen 079

5.      Shopping-   What would a vacation be without a little shopping?  On Main Street in Helen, you’ll find plenty of unique shops with unusual items you may not find anywhere else.  German and Dutch Imports, glassblowing, leather shops, wine or olive oil tasting, fudge shops, and of course, several places to buy t-shirts and other souvenirs.  You can also head to nearby Nacoochee Village, Sautee Crossing, or even into Cleveland or Clarksville to expand your shopping opportunities!  Odds are you won’t go home empty handed.

6.      Dining-   Meals are also an important part of any vacation.  We have written two posts on the many culinary options available in Helen and the surrounding towns, so for more information you can check those out.  Helen is known for German food, and there are several good restaurants to choose from in town.  But there are also many other options from fast food, to steakhouses, to pizza joints.  There’s even sushi to be found!  Or you can stop by Betty’s Grocery and grab some picnic items, or have a cookout at your cabin.  The choice is yours.

thai place 008

  1. 7.      Entertainment- Helen is not exactly Vegas, but now there are more choices for entertainment than ever before.  Especially on the weekends and during Oktoberfest, most restaurants and wineries have live music.  There are a few bars, nightclubs, and restaurants with lounges that feature karaoke and/or DJ’s, too.  Check out our post on this subject for more info, or call us at 706-878-1773

8.      Base of Operations- Helen is centrally located in the North Georgia Mountains, so it is convenient to use as a “base of operations”, especially if traveling from a farther area.  Many of our guests take day trips to the surrounding communities, or even Atlanta, to see the sights.  Whitewater rafting, hiking the Appalachian Trail, going to Six Flags, or just taking a tour on the Georgia Wine Highway…then return to your cabin for a day of rest and relaxation before heading out again!

DEJacuzzi

9.      Romantic Getaways- Staying in a cabin in the mountains is a very popular romantic fantasy for a lot of people.  Honeymoons, anniversaries, birthdays, or just couples wanting to reconnect can find the perfect cabin to suit their needs.  They can venture out to town or stay inside by the fire (in winter).  Make that fantasy come true, don’t wait!

10.  Family get-togethers- Take the kids and reconnect as a family, enjoying all the mountains have to offer.  Meet up at a cabin with friends and family that live in different areas that you don’t get to see as often as you’d like.  Plan a family reunion, have a ladies’ weekend or a guy’s retreat.  There are so many options for groups to have fun and make memories that will last a lifetime.

We have only presented the highlights here. If you would like more information on booking a cabin or finding out about activities and events, give us a call at 706-878-1773.  We’d love to help plan your next Helen, Georgia vacation!

HUNGER GAMES, THE SEQUEL- More Places to Dine in Helen, Ga

In April, 2012, we wrote about some of the wonderful restaurants in Helen, Ga.  There are so many great places to eat in the Helen area, it would take several blog posts to showcase them all.  So from time to time, we will highlight the restaurants that our staff and guests have actually been to and recommend.   Here are a few for your consideration, to make your Georgia Mountain Getaway the best ever!

Sushi is not usually something you’d associate with a trip to Helen,  but if you get a craving while you are here, we know just the place!  Spice 55 Thai & Sushi Bar is conveniently located across from the Helen Welcome Center, and serves up deliciously fresh food in a comfortable atmosphere.  I had the Eruption Roll, and it was as good as any I have had in Atlanta.  My companion ordered the ’55 Chicken’, presented in a half-pineapple, garnished with a carrot flower.  Delicious food, served with attention to detail.  They have vegetarian selections as well, and will also do take-out, so you can have a scrumptious meal back at your cabin!

Looking for something a bit more elegant for that special occasion?  Try Bernie’s, in Sautee-Nacoochee, just a few minutes’ drive from Helen.  Situated in a family-owned and operated B &B that was built in 1920 called the Nacoochee Valley Guesthouse, this quaint country restaurant serves gourmet lunches and dinners.  (I had the crab cake sandwich for lunch, it was awesome).  Fine china, linens, and antiques create an atmosphere of quiet sophistication, and the view of Mt. Yonah is outstanding.  They have an outdoor patio and gardens, perfect for small parties or weddings. Contact them for reservations at 706-878-3830.

Bernies 008

A new place in town that has generated some buzz is Survivor’s Restaurant and Lounge, on Main Street in Helen. A specialty on the menu is oysters, as well as other types of seafood.   They also serve Southern and steakhouse fare, and most reviews have been pretty good so far.  They have a full bar and entertainment some nights.  Call for information 706-878-0105.

Ok, we know- when you are in Helen you might want to try German food.  Bodensee Restaurant serves Authentic Homemade German food, located just behind Wendy’s.    Choose from several kinds of Schnitzel, wursts, sauerbraten, and several other pork and chicken dishes that I can’t pronounce!  Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, they have a full bar as well.

We mentioned Wendy’s, which is on Main Street in Helen, because sometimes you just want something quick, fast, and inexpensive while you are out and about.  There is also a Subway on Main Street, so grab some sandwiches and have a picnic on the banks of the Chattahoochee or back at your cabin.

For more information about dining while in the Helen area, give us a call at 706-878-1773.  We’d love to help make your vacation as wonderful as possible!

Where did you enjoy dining the last time you were here?  Is there someplace you’d like us to check out for you?

JUNE 2013 EVENTS IN HELEN, GA- Let’s Kick-off the Summer!

helen 110

Summer is just around the corner, and there are plenty of reasons to visit the North Georgia Mountains!   First of all, it is usually around ten degrees cooler than the lower elevations, so it is a great place to cool off under a canopy of trees or on one of the many lakes, streams, and rivers. Our Helen Georgia Cabin Rentals are close to all the attractions and events so you won’t miss a thing!

One of the first great events of the summer is the 40th Annual Helen to Atlantic Hot Air Balloon Race.  It starts on Thursday, May 30th this year and goes through Saturday, June 1st.   Race competitors and local flyers will take to the sky at 7 a.m. on Thursday (weather permitting), and will fly to I-95, landing anywhere from Maine to Miami!  The shortest distance is 225 miles and the race usually takes two days.  There will also be local flying events in town, and you can even schedule a champagne balloon flight!  (This is on many a bucket list!)  For more info, call Head Balloons, 706-865-3874.

On Saturday nights in the summer, there is nothing better than listening to live music.  Unicoi State Park hosts an Evening Concert series, featuring Bluegrass, Appalachian, and Southern Gospel music from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.  Donations for the musicians are appreciated!  For more info, call 800-573-9659.  And on the 3rd Saturday of each month, from spring through fall, Sautee-Nacoochee Vineyards will host the Swinging in the Vines music series, at their tasting room.  Local (and not so local) musicians will play.  Outdoor concert under the stars and wine tasting….sounds like a great way to enjoy the fresh mountain air!

Speaking of outdoor concerts, on Saturday evening,  June 15th,  head on over to the Sautee-Nacoochee Community Center, just outside of Helen.  They are hosting a Summerfest Lawn Party, complete with food, music, dancing, and all sorts of fun.  Bring your lawn chairs or blankets and relax.  For more info click here.

Other summer activities are in full swing by June: tubing on the river, fishing, paddle boating, hiking, mountain biking, mini-golf and golfing at Innsbruck Golf course. Or just relax at your cabin or condo and have a cookout!

Fishing in North Georgia- Near Helen, GA

photo courtesy of Riverside Trout Fishing

photo courtesy of Riverside Trout Fishing

It’s Springtime in the mountains.  Flowers are blooming, love is in the air, and a young man’s thoughts turn to….fishing!  As does anyone else who loves to fish.  Trout season usually starts at the end of March and runs through the end of October, but there are also year-round streams in White County (home of Helen, Ga).  So if you love to fish, here are some options for you to consider when vacationing in Helen, Georgia.

river leaves 019

Hatchery conditions were good this winter, and recent rains have contributed to good flow in the local streams and rivers.  The Chattahoochee River runs right through downtown Helen, but upstream from Helen anglers can find peaceful spots to fish away from the tourists in the Chattahoochee Wildlife Management Area.  Access is fairly easy and you can fish year round.

Another place close to Helen is Duke’s Creek, in the Smithgall Woods Conservation area, considered “The Holiest of Holies” in Georgia Trout circles.  It is rated as one of the top 100 trophy trout streams in the country, and is catch and release only- so be sure to take a photo of that big one before you let it get away!  Hours and times for fishing are limited, so please see their website for details.

Lake Burton 014

Lake fishing is also very popular in North GeorgiaLake Burton is about a twenty minute drive from Helen, and Lake Lanier is about 30-40 minutes.  Catch world-class trout, bass, and walleye- Georgia Lake Fishing will be your guide.  Half-day, full day, and even night trips, they have options to suit your needs and interests.  See their website for pricing and other information.

The Soque River is another option close to Helen, Ga, that may be less crowded but is very peaceful and scenic.  Riverside Trout Fishing offers a guide service for fishing this “best kept secret” river that runs through nearby Habersham County.  Conditions on this river are ideal to support prolific numbers of trout.  Check out Riverside Trout Fishing’s website for more information.

Lake Burton 028

Need gear while in town?  Unicoi Outfitters has a full service fly fishing shop just outside of Helen.  They also offer classes on fly fishing, as well as guided day and half-day trips on the Chattahoochee River or even on private waters.   Check out their website or stop by the shop while in Helen.

Don’t forget to get the proper licenses to fish- to fish for trout, you will need both a Georgia fishing license and a trout license. In addition, you will need a special recreation pass if you fish in certain wildlife management areas.  Licenses can be purchased at local sporting goods stores or by calling 1-800-366-2661.

It’s no accident that some of our cabins are decorated with fishing themes, or have names that evoke the sport (such as Angler’s Haven or The Sportsman).  Come on up, catch some trout, and cook it on the grill at your cabin!  Let us know if we can help with accommodations or information on fishing in the Helen area.

Do you have a “fish tale” to tell about fishing in the North Georgia Mountains?  What spot would you like to try?

Speaking of the Hansel and Gretel Candy Kitchen, you must stop by and try their delicious fudge, in more flavors than you can imagine.  They are also well-known, and with good reason, for their hand-dipped chocolate covered strawberries (milk, dark, white, your choice).  Almond bark, toffee, candy apples….they even have a sugar-free section!  Try the free samples to get started.  We guarantee it will be difficult to walk out empty-handed!

Walk across the street and up the stairs to Helen’s newest purveyor of gourmet treats, The Alpine Olive Tree.  This unique shop is a Tasting Room- for olive oils and balsamic vinegars.  Gleaming metal canisters line the room and hold pure virgin olive oils in all sorts of flavors- mushroom sage, herbs de provence, blood orange, even butter-flavored!  We never knew olive oils came in so many tasty flavors.  The balsamic vinegars come in flavors that pair nicely with the oils to make dressings and marinades, such as pomegranate, raspberry, even dark chocolate (which was delicious by itself)!

The staff is extremely helpful and knowledgeable, offering suggestions on how to use their products at home.  For example, the blood orange oil made the best dark chocolate brownies! They also sell their products online on their website, which is great because this stuff is addicting!

TAKE A TRIP ON THE GEORGIA WINE HIGHWAY- WINERIES AND VINEYARDS IN NORTH GEORGIA

wine hwy sign 002

It’s no longer the best- kept secret in North Georgia- Georgia Wines are gaining in popularity and winning well-deserved awards.  A few of the wineries in North Georgia have been in business for many years, but over the past ten years, several new vineyards have been established and are growing grapes and producing fabulous wines of many varieties.

The “Georgia Wine Highway” was established to increase awareness of the various wineries and encourage travelers to plan a route to visit the vineyards and tasting rooms.  The “highway” begins in Braselton (near I-85 in Atlanta), and continues northward through several counties, including  White, Lumpkin, and Rabun.  The entire route covers several different wineries, but in this and future posts, we will focus on the ones closest to Helen, Georgia.  Our cabins and condos provide a convenient place to stay when visiting some of the best Tasting Rooms on the Georgia Wine Highway.

APdeck

The Georgia Winegrower’s Association hosts The Wine Highway Weekend at least twice per year, usually in March and December.  The participating wineries will be listed on their website, and participants pay a fee at the first tasting room they visit.  They receive a special souvenir glass they will use for the tastings, taking that glass from winery to winery, enjoying wine tastings, food and music.  It’s fun to have an agenda and vineyard-hop!  Each winery has its’ own unique setting and personality, not to mention the wide range of wines available for tasting, from sweet to very dry and everything in between.  Just remember to please drink responsibly, and bring your Designated Driver!

Wine Hwy Mar12 053

There are several reasons why the wine-making industry has flourished in Georgia.  The North Georgia Mountains combine an ideal climate, terrain, soil, and elevation to produce some of the best wines anywhere.  The area has often been compared to the Piedmont region of Italy, but if you visit in spring or fall, you may feel as though you have been transported to Napa Valley, California, as you gaze at the rolling hills covered with grapevines.

Wine Hwy Mar12 048

Most of the wineries hold special events throughout the year, such as the Annual Winefest at Habersham Winery in the spring and Crush Fest at Yonah Mountain Vineyards in at the end of summer.  We have covered these events previously in our posts- “Why is May the Best Time to Visit Helen, Georgia?” and “Festivals Galore- Events in September 2012 Helen, Georgia”.  We also provide updates on these and more current events on our Facebook and Google+ pages and on Twitter, so please follow us for the latest on your favorite Georgia Winery!

We will also be doing future posts spotlighting the wineries close to Helen, so follow this blog if you want find out more about what the wineries of North Georgia have to offer.

Happy Tasting!

Are you planning a Family Reunion this year?  Or perhaps a Girl’s or Guy’s Weekend Retreat?  Helen, Georgia is a great place to hold your group event, and we at Blue Ridge Cabin Rentals are happy to help with your planning.

We have several cabins that sleep up to twelve guests, and smaller cabins that are near each other, for close proximity yet privacy.  Hot tubs, game rooms, wifi, and firepits are just some of the amenities that make our cabins fun for the whole group or family.

We also have condos in town that have their own grassy area, and are within walking distance to downtown Helen attractions.  The condos can accommodate up to twenty guests altogether.  Each condo sleeps four guests, are fully furnished with full kitchens and wifi.  The lawn is a perfect place to set up a volleyball or badminton net!

While we do not have room at our cabins for a large group to congregate (more than each cabin is allowed to accommodate), there are plenty of picnic areas and pavilions nearby to accommodate group activities.  Unicoi State Park has six picnic areas, all only a short drive from our cabins.  Moccasin Creek State Park, near Lake Burton, is also a short and very scenic drive from Helen, and Vogel State Park is another option close by.

There are two parks in Helen, Pete’s Park, which has a playground for the kids and picnic tables; and the grassy area along the Chattahoochee River on the backside of town (past the Festhalle)  which has picnic tables and a pavilion.  For information on reserving the pavilion, please contact the Helen Welcome Center at 800-858-8027.

Depending on the time of year your group comes to Helen, there are always plenty of activities.  Have a mini-golf tournament at one of the courses in town; go hiking, fishing, tubing, mountain biking, or zip-lining.  Go shopping in Helen and the surrounding areas, or enjoy wine tasting at the wineries and tour the vineyards nearby.  We have covered a lot of these activities in previous blog posts, or call us (706-878-1773) and our Guest Services staff would be happy to help with the information necessary to make your reunion or retreat one everyone will remember for years to come.

We have provided accommodations for church groups, writer’s retreats, scrapbooking clubs, guys on fishing trips, families celebrating a couple’s golden anniversary, small wedding groups, and of course, family reunions.  While we cannot host large groups or events in the cabins, there are lots of options for your meeting or gathering.  Let us know how we can help plan your special group event.

What type of event are you planning?  What type of activities would you like to plan for your group outing?
