If you are spending New Year’s Eve this year in Helen, Georgia, we have great news!  This year the Helen Festhalle will be holding the 1st Annual New Year’s Celebration, featuring the Dropping of the Edelweiss!  There will be music, food, dancing, and of course, party hats will be provided.  Come join in the festivities on Tuesday, December 31st.  Doors open at 8pm, admission is only $15.00 per person, or $25.00 per couple.  Contact the Helen Chamber at 706-878-1908 for more info.

The Helen Theatre is also having a show on New Year’s Eve– the “Double Trouble Show” (a celebrity tribute) will ring in the New Year.  Click here for the website of call 706-969-5671 for showtimes and ticket info.  Note: This event, “Helen Theatre of The Stars”, is being held at Unicoi State Park, not at the Helen Theatre.  You can still call the number for info and tickets.

Local restaurants usually have celebrations on New Year’s Eve, and that information should be available closer to the date.  Call us at 706-878-1773 or call the Helen Welcome Center at 706-878-2181 for details.  Some folks choose to relax in their cabin, sip a favorite beverage and watch the ball drop on TV, and that’s a fun time too!

January is usually a quiet month, meant for snuggling by the fire and watching movies all day in your cabin.  But there are still some activities going on in town should you choose to venture out.  If the weather is not too bad, take a hike!  There is an easy trail around Unicoi Lake, or you can join the “First Hike”   at Smithgall Woods.  The hike begins at 2:00 p.m.  Smithgall’s Manager, John Erbele, will lead the hike to the cottage facility where hot cider will be waiting.  Learn more about Charlie Smithgall, whose generosity made the park possible.  Let the First Hike be your first step toward good health, then continue through the year with progressively longer hikes.  “A Walk in the Park” brochure offers guidance for hike distance and difficulty.  Call 706-878-3087 for more info.  Start the New Year off on a healthy note!
