January is usually a quiet month, meant for snuggling by the fire and watching movies all day in your cabin. But there are still some activities going on in town should you choose to venture out. If the weather is not too bad, take a hike! There is an easy trail around Unicoi Lake, or you can join the “First Hike” at Smithgall Woods. The hike begins at 2:00 p.m. Smithgall’s Manager, John Erbele, will lead the hike to the cottage facility where hot cider will be waiting. Learn more about Charlie Smithgall, whose generosity made the park possible. Let the First Hike be your first step toward good health, then continue through the year with progressively longer hikes. “A Walk in the Park” brochure offers guidance for hike distance and difficulty.
