If you are staying in Helen or the surrounding areas for New Year’s Eve 2102, you are probably wondering where to have breakfast on New Year’s Day. You can always whip up a leisurely brunch in your fully equipped cabin or condo, or you can dine at one of many fine restaurants in downtown Helen.
The Meeting Place is right on Main Street (across from Jolly’s Toys and near Betty’s Country Store), and though it is fairly new, locals and tourists alike have been raving about their home-cooked meals featuring fresh ingredients. They serve breakfast all day, so if you are craving Eggs Benedict or a Three Egg Omlette, this is the place to be!
Helen’s Country Café, at the North end of town (also on Main St.) also serves up country-style breakfast and lunches; and Hofer’s Bakery serves a German-style breakfast, with lots of delicious goodies in their bakery case. If you prefer a buffet, The Lodge at Unicoi in Unicoi State Park has a restaurant that serves a great buffet where you can eat all you want. January is usually a quiet, snuggle-by-the-fireplace kind of month, but there are still lots of activities going on in Helen. On Saturday and Sunday the weekend of January 12 & 13, there is a concert at the Sautee Nacoochee Community Association in Sautee (near Helen). Dede Vogt ( who has played with the Indigo Girls, among others) will be performing. She is responsible for helping to nurture the Atlanta music scene and has led the way for folk musicians for quite some time. As a multi-talented instrumentalist, her wide range of influences and provocative style help to create magic in the studio and on stage. The Saturday evening concert begins at 7:30PM, and the Sunday concert begins at 2PM. For more information and tickets contact the SNCA at 706-878-3300 or visit http://www.snca.org
On Saturday, January 19th, the 34th Annual 18K Hogpen Hill Climb race will be held to benefit Habitat for Humanity. This popular race is held in scenic Unicoi State Park. If you like to run and want to help a great cause in a beautiful setting, check their website for more information.
On Saturday, January 26th, Sautee Nacoochee Vineyards will host the Winter Wino Festival at their Tasting Room. Bring friends and come celebrate! Live music, cash wine bar, and prize awarded for best costume. Refreshments and non-alcoholic beverages provided. 706-878-1056, www.sauteenacoocheevineyards.com.
On that weekend, you can also learn to Contra dance at the Sautee Nacoochee Community Association on Saturday, January 26th. There is a potluck dinner at 6:30, dance lesson at 7:30. It’s sort of a cross between square dancing and line dancing, and proponents say it is a lot of fun! For more info please click here for the SNCA website.
