KICK OFF THE SUMMER- June 2012 Events in Helen, GA

Summer is just around the corner, and there are plenty of reasons to visit the North Georgia Mountains!   First of all, it is usually around ten degrees cooler than the lower elevations, so it is a great place to cool off under a canopy of trees or on one of the many lakes, streams, and rivers. Our Helen Georgia Cabin Rentals are close to all the attractions and events so you won’t miss a thing!

One of the first great events of the summer is the 39th Annual Helen to Atlantic Hot Air Balloon Race.  It starts on Thursday, May 31st this year and goes through Saturday, June 2nd.  Race competitors and local flyers will take to the sky at 7 a.m. on Thursday (weather permitting), and will fly to I-95, landing anywhere from Maine to Miami!  The shortest distance is 225 miles and the race usually takes two days.  There will also be local flying events in town, and you can even schedule a champagne balloon flight!  (This is on many a bucket list!)  For more info, call Head Balloons, 706-865-3874.

On Saturday, June 9, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.,  the Sautee-Nacoochee Community Center will host the Twelve Rivers Arts Festival, an outdoor gathering featuring arts, crafts, and foods.  Beer and wine will also be available.  Stroll through the booths and sample local cuisine, and purchase  a memento of your trip directly from the artisans. Admission is free and the festival is only minutes from downtown Helen.

On Saturday nights in the summer, there is nothing better than listening to live music.  Unicoi State Park hosts an Evening Concert series, featuring Bluegrass, Appalachian, and Southern Gospel music from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.  Donations for the musicians are appreciated!  For more info, call 800-573-9659.  And on the 3rd Saturday of each month, from spring through fall, Sautee-Nacoochee Vineyards will host the Swinging in the Vines music series, at their tasting room.  Local (and not so local) musicians will play.  Outdoor concert under the stars and wine tasting….sounds like a great way to enjoy the fresh mountain air!

Other summer activities are in full swing by June: tubing on the river, fishing, paddle boating, hiking, mountain biking, mini-golf and golfing at Innsbruck Golf course. Or just relax at your cabin or condo and have a cookout!

Our friendly staff is available to help plan your vacation activities, so give us a call!  706-878-1773.  Check our blog posts for more detailed information on fun things to do in Helen Georgia and the North Georgia Mountains!
